An optimist or optimistic, a pessimist or pessimistic

Are you an optimist? Or a pessimist?

A few weeks ago I took a screenshot of the following quotation (cita) on the TED Talks Instagram account.

“Optimists don’t shun problems.

Optimism is about embracing problems

because it’s problems that make solutions”

Kevin Kelly

(*to shun: to avoid evitar– or refusenegarse– to accept someone or something).

So… according to that definition:

Are you AN OPTIMIST?

In my case, if I focus on the definition, I wouldn’t say I am AN OPTIMIST (sustantivo, por eso lleva delante el artículo ‘a’).

I am OPTIMISTIC (adjetivo) about some things like the evolution of science or the power of human creativity.

Utilizamos OPTIMISTIC/PESSIMISTIC como adjetivos, es decir para describir personas o situaciones:

  • Her doctors are optimistic about her recovery.
  • Experts have an optimistic perspective of the current situation.
  • That is a very pessimistic interpretation of the book.
  • The factory will close in January and the workers are pessimistic about their future.

Let us get back to our quotation.

However, the quote says that ‘optimism is about EMBRACING problems’ (abrazar los problemas), which means ‘to accept problems enthusiastically’.

Mmmm… I think, if that is the case (si ese es el caso), I am definitely far from being an optimist…

How about you?

Do you see problems as opportunities to learn?

Or do you rather (más bien) just hate them?

I’m just curious…

Aquí puedes cantar algo de esto que te he contado:
